The 1975
I found this band 3 years ago, falling in love with what is now my bathroom break song at a concert, “Chocolate.” With each album release, I kept my fingers crossed that they wouldn’t blow it, and that they’d continue to write great music that stood out above all the rest. Much to my delight, they took a political route that challenges today’s culture while continuing to write amazing melodies and doing what every artist should do: creating a movement of like-minded people. I finally had the pleasure of seeing them live with my husband last weekend and it was SO MUCH FUN. Their sound is a blend of rock, pop, synth and smart lyrics. My favorite songs, artistically and lyrically:
Love it if we made it
Always want to die, sometimes
Sincerity is scary
Somebody else (truly cemented my fandom)
It’s not living if it’s not with you
Be my mistake
The man who married a robot
Some of the biggest critiques of my music have been “middle of the road lyrics that aren’t very exciting or thought provoking”and “too repetitive”. I agree 100% and have been challenging myself to change this with every new song I create. I think the songwriting style of The 1975 is very interesting as they use shock factor terms here and there, mixed in with very verbose, smart lyrics, then go to a simple, singable chorus. Here’s a song that really matters, touches on hard truths, what young people think about the world today, and America today. They took a huge topic of “everything that’s fucked up in the world” and made a song that sums up how people are feeling, how young people are feeling, and how I’m feeling. Finally, I have a song that helps me understand my own feelings and gives me a friend to sympathize with. I too would love it if we made it. This is a perfect example of music that matters.
Saying controversial things just for the hell of it
Selling melanin and then suffocate the black men
Start with misdemeanours and we’ll make a business out of them
And we can find out the information
Access all the applications
that are hardening positions based on miscommunication
Oh Fuck your feelings
Truth is only hearsay
We’re just left to decay
Modernity has failed us
Yes, I’d love it if we made it
Yes, I’d love it if we made it
Yes, I’d love it if we made it
I’ve got the Jones right through my bones
Write it on a piece of stone
A beach of drowning three-year-olds
Rest in peace Lil Peep
The poetry is in the streets
Jesus save us
Modernity has failed us
Yes, I’d love it if we made it
Yes, I’d love it if we made it
Yes, I’d love it if we made it
And I’d love it if we made it
And I’d love it if we made it
And I’d love it if we made it
I’d love it if we made it
Degradation
Fossil fuelling
Masturbation
Immigration
Liberal kitsch
Kneeling on a pitch
Excited to be indicted
Unrequited house with seven pools
“Thank you Kanye, very cool”
The war has been incited and guess what?
You’re all invited
And you’re famous
Modernity has failed us
And I’d love it if we made it
And I’d love it if we made it
Tell me something I didn’t know
And I’d love it if we made it
And I’d love it if we made it
And I’d love it if we made it
And I’d love it if we made it
Cool ideas to keep in mind for all my fellow songwriters out there. 🙂
